Sharks take bite out of Nightmare

A match up across divisions gave the Sharks a look at some other teams in the league. Going into their weekend games the New Jersey Nightmare elite were fading out of playoff contention with a 3-11-4 record while boasting one of the leagues top scorers in Bob Beauchamp. Beauchamp averaging just over 2 points a game looked to give the Nightmare a boost in the standings.

The Suffolk Sharks came in looking to regain their winning form after dropping their first game of the season to rival 495ers. The Sharks came in leading the New England division with a 9-1 record. The Sharks balanced scoring has been giving teams problems all season with teams not being able to contain any of their potent scorers.

The evening began with the Sharks minor team taking on the New Jersey Nightmare South Jersey squad. In game 1 the Sharks kept their hot streak going as they quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on gaols by Phil Russo and Trey Hartwell. But the Sharks minor team has had trouble holding leads and the Nightmare climbed back into the game and took the lead late in the second half. The Sharks couldn't put the puck in the net despite outshooting the Nightmare 26-21 in the game. In the end the Sharks dropped the first game 2-3.

In game 2 the Sharks looked to come out flying and win a game for team leader Tom Harwood who was thrown out of the first game for fighting. The Sharks were down 3-0 after the first and looked deflated. Bryan Wish gave the Sharks a needed boost by getting the on the board with an early goal in the second. From there Chris Vassallo took over. First scoring on the power play then adding two more to tie it up at 4 in regulation. Overtime started and Chris's hot shooting continued as he sniped the game winner at 14:40 in overtime.

The Sharks elite came into their first game keeping the high intensity going as they quickly moved the puck around on the undersized rink. Two quick goals by Ken Baldwin had the Sharks up 2-0. The Nightmare responded and ended the first half with a 5-3 lead. The shorthanded Sharks came out in the second half looking more like the team that has been so dominate all season. The Sharks scored 8 unanswered goals to post an 11-5 win. In the win the Sharks lost Ken Baldwin for the second game for fighting and the Nightmare lost their leading scorer Bobby Beauchamp as well as goalie Jim Lundquist. Rob Lopinto earned the first star of the game with 5 points (3g, 2a). Also scoring a hat trick was Darren Guerriere (3g, 1a) and Ken Baldwin (3g).

In game 2 the Nightmare decided to play a zone defense and not pressure the Sharks in their zone. Slowing the game down seemed to be a good idea but with such a potent offense the Sharks are tought to contain. Thomas Cartwright had back to back goals in the first to give the sharks a 2-1 lead at the half. In the second half the Sharks continued to take their time and make the right passes. Cartwright notched his hat trick goal at 9:26 in the second half which also turned out to be the game winner. The Sharks elite won 5-3 with Rob Lopinto and Eric Gomes also adding goals. The Sharks elite are now 11-1 while the Nightmare drop to 3-13-4.

Sharks minor team came back to face the Nightmare Voorhees (4-7-3) in the second set of games for the day. The minors were already shorthanded missing a multiple of players and after playing two games earlier didn't have the energy needed to skate with the fresh Voorhees team. The Sharks dropped the first game 4-1 with the lone goal being scored on the power play by Trey Hartwell with Charles Nack getting the assist.

In the final game of the day the Sharks were leaving everything on the rink. They were skating hard but couldn't match the Nightmare Voorhees club as they dropped the second game 5-2. Bright spots for the Sharks included goals by Trey Hartwell and Mikey Mannino. The Sharks minor team dropped a chance to move up in the division and currently sit in 3rd with a 5-5-4 (14pts) record.

Next game is March 7th where the Sharks elite will once again face their rivals, the 495ers at Inline 1 in Mt. Sinai. Ticket information can be found at SuffolkSharks.com.
