Opening Night Success

Opening night for the Sharks has come and gone but last memories we left with the fans and players alike. With music in the background from LI Nights Entertainment, the Sharks Minor team took the floor. There was over 200 fans lining the boards and in the stands excited to get their first taste of pro inline hockey. The Sharks minor team got off to a slow start as the Fireants quickly posted a 3-0 lead. Shortly after Mikey Mannino put a breakaway wrister over the glove of Fireants goaltender Brian Cachuela, to score the first goal in Sharks history. The Fireants responded with another goal and the Sharks ended the first half down 4-1. The Sharks made a strong comeback in the second as they scored 3 unanswered goals to tie to score at 4. With less then 20 seconds remaining in regulation the Sharks nearly recorded the win as Mike Bergin rang one off the post, only to have the Fireants end it in regulation as they came back down quickly and scored. The refs quickly conviened and ruled it no goal to the delight of the 200+ in the building. That meant the Sharks were guaranteed 1 point but were hungry for their first win. First shift into the overtime period Niklos Tomczyk of the Fireants came down and put a well placed wrister between the legs Sharks goaltender Greg Breska. Final score 5-4 OT.

Game number 1 for the elite team was a highly physical contest with lots of scoring. The Sharks came out strong and John Lechmansky netted the Sharks first elite goal of the season from Kenny Baldwin Jr 2:19 into the first. Not long after Max Stern made it a 2-0 and the Fireants looked outmatched. The scoring went back and forth for most of the game as the Sharks led 7-6 and the Sharks scoring took off. John Lechmansky then started what would be 4 unanswered goals as the Sharks elite team closed out their first game with a 11-6 victory which was topped off with a goal with only 1 second left by Rob Maninno. John Lechmansky led al scorers with 5 goals.

Game 2 for the Sharks minor team was a chance at redemption. They came out strong but so did the Fireants. As the Fireants scored quickly it gave the Sharks another hole to climb out of. The Sharks were relentless with their shots but Fireants goaltender Greg Marshall was equal to the task as he turned shot after shot away. At the half the Sharks trailed 5-2 and that is the way it would end. The Sharks finished their first weekend off with a loss and an overtime loss but came away with much more. Their first pro game with many more to come.

In the last game of the night the Fireants looked to try and record a split for the day as Andy Pettola stood on his head all game. With the score tied at 2 the fans rang the building by starting up a Lets Go Sharks! chant that seemed to spark the Sharks. On the powerplay with sharp puck movement Rob Lopinto blasted a slap shot from the point that beat Andy Pettola glove side to give the Sharks a 3-2 lead. Less then a minute later Thomas Cartwright coralled the puck from behind his own net and came up the rink with speed. As he drove down the slot beating 3 Fireant skaters and drew the goalie to his stick side then fed a quick pass to Max Stern for a quick tap in to extend the lead to 4-2. Penalties nearly cost the Sharks all night as a 5 min highsticking penalty was given to Darren Guerriere and a later boarding double minor by Thomas Cartwright. The Sharks killed most of the penalty time by great forechecking by Kenny Baldwin Jr. and John Lechmansky. With their goalie pulled the Fireants closed the gap to 1 with a late goal, but too late as the goal came with 4 seconds left. The Sharks elite team finished the night and started the season 2-0. Rob LoPinto was the sharks leading scorer with 2 goals.

The Sharks would like to thank all their fans for showing their support the entire day and would also like to thank their sponsors for making this all possible.
